An example with a quality closer to what I might want:

-It almost seems to use some sort of 3D mask to create a rapidly generating cloud. Perhaps the cloud could be generated as a static object, with the mask animated, with a small amount of post-production animation later (namely, turbulent displace). Will need to look into this.

Real-life Examples

Failed Demolition

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiNrzmbdC1Q

Shows the first part of a demolition, but the building fails to fall in on itself and collapse completely.

Good demostration of first section of demolition - base fragments with dust clouds emitted. Building falls on base

Implosion demolition

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79sJ1bMR6VQ

Interesting details - flashes come from all over the building, eg steel construction is weakened as the building falls down. The base seems to then be fragmented and the building itself falls down.

Existing Simulation - Very interesting

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRI88bEsMcg

From what i can see, simply a number of base elements are given a rotation keyframe - and bam, the structure starts to fall down.
