Initial Concept

Allright, here we go…

The Initial Idea: Believeable 3D Demolition

My plan so far is to basically use dynamics system(s) in Maya to create convincing demolitions of a structure(s). I hope to take it further than simply having a storm of particles, and actually include the structural failure of the building as it falls down, with glass breaking, concrete cracking, etc.

From some initial research it appears there are a few components to the process:

  • Research into real-world demolition, to observe real-word characteristics of the motion and physics involved
  • Construction/modelling of the building itself, including internal details and structures to add an overall sense of realism
  • Planning of the overall demolition, and setting up the dynamics system to trigger structural failures at the right time and to visual specifications
  • Deconstruction and separation of the original model into pieces, to trigger the aforementioned plans
  • Simulation using rigid bodies of the actual event taking place - possibly in sections.
  • Particles to add dust and debris - from both manually placed emitters and triggered from interaction of geometry in the dynamic simulation
  • Post-production to bring the rendered layers together - the usual diffuse, spec, AO etc, as well as particles, to speed up render times

It’s going to be a lot of work, but I think it’s possible. Here’s hoping it’s easier than cloth…
